A guide to the best battery grips for the Sony A7II-series

Battery grips doubles your battery time and provides an extra vertical grip for the camera, this is especially convenient when shooting in portrait mode. When you use heavy lenses, the battery grip also helps balancing the camera since it ads a bit of weight to your camera's body.

If you go on Ebay or Amazon you will find plenty of different off-brand models. Buying one of these can save you some money and get you a few features that the original version lacks. But if you're unlucky, you might end up with a grip that breaks before you even attach it to the camera. In this guide we compare four reliable off-brand models. But lets start with the original and unfortunately the most expensive one, Sony's own version.

Sony original battery grip (VGC2EM)

The genuine Sony grip is the most expensive choice,  but it's probably the best one out there and it matches the camera perfectly in terms of looks. The buttons, dials, battery cover and connecting terminal on the grip are securely sealed for dust and moisture protection.

Features:
  • Vertical shutter release button
  • Auto Exposure Lock
  • C1-C3 buttons
  • Front/Back Control Dials
  • Protection Against Dust and Moisture
  • Price: USD 298 at B&H Photo

Meike

Meike makes affordable photographic equipment. This grip comes in at USD 63 at Meike Online Store, but you can also get it on Ebay, Amazon etc. This grip does not have the same feel as the Sony and it is a bit more plasticky. It doesn't match the camera perfectly in terms of looks as well as the Sony, but you will have to look quite close to notice the difference.  The Sony grip wins in terms of overall quality, but Meike's version is not bad at all and at less than a third of the price, this grip is a very good option.

Features:
  • Vertical shutter release button
  • AF/MF Switch
  • C1-C3 buttons
  • Front/Back Control Dials
  • Price: USD 63 at Meike Online Store

Vello

Vello BG-S3 Battery Grip is similar to the Meike in terms of looks, features and quality.

Features:
  • Vertical shutter release button
  • AF/MF Switch
  • C1-C3 buttons
  • Front/Back Control Dials
  • Price: USD 80 at B&H Photo

Vivitar

The Vivitar is similar to the Meike and Vello grips in terms of quality. It  includes a wireless remote that allows you to take pictures within 20 feet. This grip has a vertical shutter release button but it lacks the front and back control dials, as well as the C1-C3 buttons and AF/MF switch.

Features:
  • Vertical shutter release button
  • Wireless remote
  • Price: USD 64 at Beach Camera

Neewer

Similar to the Vivitar grip, the Neewer comes with a remote, but this one has more features.

Features:
  • Vertical shutter release button
  • Front/Back Control Dials
  • AF(auto focus)/MF(manual focus)/AEL(AE lock) functions
  • C1-C3 buttons
  • In open space, the remote control can reach 100 meters
  • Support screen lock function
  • Support lock display mode
  • The timer can set delay time, exposure time, time interval and number of shots
  • Price USD 67 on Ebay
